In our previous installment, we took a look at my attempt to follow the instructions for drawing Mr. Mind provided in the above comic. Returning to that same feature, we also find this tutorial on rendering Captain Marvel's feline friend, Mr. Tawny:
The unfinished piece below it is apparently Dr. Sivana, the third subject of the lesson. If I actually did a finished version, it is lost to history.
This is pretty self-explanatory, I suppose. In retrospect, I'm not sure why I didn't find a white or colored piece of cardboard, but its drabness has an certain low-key appeal. It would be another two or three years before I'd start using an X-acto knife with any regularity (and even then, I usually favored big scary box-cutters instead), so this was cut with poked-through scissors, hence the ragged edges.
A couple of earlier pieces today. Firstly, a snowman. I can state this with certainty, as my mother thoughtfully noted my intent. This is on the back of a legal pad that has several pieces dated "Jan. 1972". I believe that this may be inspired by the snowman we built on St. Patrick's day that year, who wore a cardboard Leprechaun's hat, with facial features made from gummed paper shamrock labels, though this drawing lacks the detail necessary to confirm it.
From a few months earlier, we find a ...a thing with three legs and one eye. Because bilateral symmetry is for sissies.
Sounds like a plausible enough title for a children's book, wouldn't you say? It's not that likely, but it's within the realm of possibility that this is an attempt to draw Rat Fink. My grandmother had a stack of 1963-65 Boy's Life magazines in a drawer that I liked to look at, and I have a couple drawings from later on that are definitely based on a cover of one of those. They were chock-full of Roth and Weird-Ohs ads. The only hitch being that at that age, I was scared of them, so I don't know how likely it is that I'd have been drawing from them. The man next to him looks sort of like late-'80s era Michael Jackson, but that's obviously coincidental...Michael was still recognizably human at this point.
This was the format for book reports in Mrs. Robinson's 2nd grade class. There should be a second card with a synopsis, but it's not anywhere I can find. Note that I turned this in late...those who know me personally will be unsurprised. I believe this must be the edition I read, but I don't remember anything about it.
Here we have a grouping of my favorite forest animals. There's a bird...that's reasonable enough. And then there's...ummm...an octopus. Well, why not? And then there's the dogephant. I don't know if I started drawing a dog and changed my mind halfway through, or just wasn't clear on how elephants are put together. Judging by the smaller ears, this is an Indian dogephant rather than an African dogephant.
